How GST is Calculated

Adding GST (Exclusive): When the price does not include GST, the tax is added on top.

GST Amount = Price × (GST Rate / 100)

Total Price = Price + GST Amount

For example, a product priced at ₹10,000 with 18% GST: GST = ₹1,800, Total = ₹11,800.

Removing GST (Inclusive / Reverse): When the price already includes GST:

Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)

GST Amount = Total Price − Base Price

For example, a product with MRP ₹11,800 at 18% GST: Base = ₹10,000, GST = ₹1,800.

CGST, SGST & IGST Explained

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales. Rate is half of the total GST rate.
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales. Also half of the total GST rate.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales or imports. Equals the full GST rate.

For a ₹10,000 product at 18% GST sold within the same state: CGST = 9% (₹900) + SGST = 9% (₹900) = Total ₹1,800. If sold to another state: IGST = 18% (₹1,800).

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate GST on MRP?
MRP is GST-inclusive. Use the "GST Inclusive" mode in this calculator, enter the MRP, and it will extract the base price and GST amount for you. Formula: Base Price = MRP / (1 + GST%/100).
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For transactions within the same state, GST is split into CGST (Central) and SGST (State), each at half the rate. For inter-state transactions, IGST is charged at the full rate. The total tax amount is the same either way.
What are the current GST rates in India?
India has GST rates of 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential items like milk, vegetables, and grains are at 0%. Gold is at 3%. Most services are at 18%. Luxury items and cars are at 28%.
Is GST inclusive and exclusive the same?
No. GST-exclusive means the listed price does not include tax — you pay more than the listed amount. GST-inclusive means tax is already part of the listed price — you pay exactly the listed amount, which includes the hidden tax.
How do I know which GST rate applies to my product?
Every product has an HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) code that determines its GST rate. You can look up HSN codes on the CBIC website or GST portal. Common rates: food items 5-12%, services 18%, luxury 28%.
